10 Gbits/s XFP optical transceiver operates up to 40 km

Tokyo, Japan — Fujitsu Limited has developed a 10 Gbits/s Small Form Factor Pluggable (XFP) optical transceiver that operates over a wide temperature range of -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C, and at transmission distances of up to 40 km. The transceiver will enable the development of smaller optical transmission equipment that can function at higher speeds and in a broader range of temperature environments.

The XFP-type of optical transceiver is the smallest transceiver within the 10 Gbits/s Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) optical module industry standard. The Fujitsu optical transceiver supports both 9.95 Gbits/s (SONET) and 10.3 Gbits/s (10 Gigibit Ethernet) rates and comes with pluggable optical and electrical interfaces, which allows for easy expansion or maintenance of a system without shutting it down.

Higher temperatures in modern optical equipment, resulting from increasingly compact, high-speed, multi-port devices as well as the need to install devices in environments with harsh temperatures have created demand for transceivers that are capable of operating in broader range of temperatures, said Fujitsu. To meet the growing requirement for a broader operating temperature range, Fujitsu incorporated control-circuit technology that enabled the stable operation of optical devices over a wide range of temperatures and a high-efficiency heat dissipation construction.

Product samples will be on exhibit at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) 2007 in Anaheim California, March 27-29.
