IPTV continues to gain worldwide traction with approximately 50 carriers currently deploying it, and new carriers jumping on the bandwagon daily. Calix, the largest telecom equipment supplier with a focus on access solutions for broadband service delivery, has selected Ikanos Communications' multimode application chipsets to power its E-series IP Service Edge Node (SEN). Ikanos high-density, low-power chipsets for multi-mode applications enables Calix to offer cost-effective, high-bandwidth VDSL2 and ADSL2+ services in Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) and Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) applications. The expectation is that Ikanos chipsets will be at the forefront of IPTV deployment in North America.

The multi-mode operation of Ikanos' chipsets is designed to enable to build a very high density line card with 48 ports--the highest in the industry today. The 48-port multimode line card will drive the cost of deployment down as a greater number of people are serviced per card. Multimode means that it can operate in VDSL2 mode, or ADSL mode. If consumers don't upgrade to new services, they can still connect to the same line card with those taking advantage of additional services. Upgrades can take place as a consumer is ready.

There are two aspects to the 48-port multimode card. The chipset must be dense enough to perform 48 ports of multimode DSL and have a sufficiently low power consumption to meet stringent carrier requirements. Ikanos chipsets were selected based on their ability to meet both requirements.

Line cards based on such multi-mode chipsets can enable carriers to smoothly transition nodes, remote terminals and central offices to VDSL2 technology, while minimizing upgrade costs. Additionally, delivering advanced services from a single, multi-mode line card can enable carriers to reduce operating costs, streamline inventories and simplify field operations.

"Calix selected Ikanos because they have extensive VDSL deployments with carriers worldwide, and have the most experience with the technology," said John Faxio, director of market development for the E-Series at Calix. "Ikanos was the best choice for our E5 platform because it provided the highest density, lowest power consumption and multi-mode capabilities."

"Calix is a leader in the access market for IPTV deployments in North America," said Piyush Sevalia, director of product marketing for access products at Ikanos. "Their selection of Ikanos chipsets validates Ikanos' market and technology leadership."

The Calix E5 IP Service Edge Node is the industry's first purpose-built, IP-based, Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) platform. Leveraging a robust Ethernet switching core, the E5 SEN delivers ultra-broadband services over the last mile of copper, enabling high-demand, revenue-generating services such as IPTV, VOIP, and video over high-speed Internet access. The Calix E5 cost-effectively meets these demands while dramatically reducing installed CAPEX and ongoing operating costs.
